There are very few toys that ever become childhood icons, a few are Barbie dolls for girls and for the boys the trusted toy car and in particular Matchbox. Over the years some other toys have been added to the list, like Star Wars action figures and toys. Another popular toy for both boys and girls is Winnie The Pooh, and not just the toys but the movies. There are several other iconic toys for both boys, and girls plus a new addition that has also captured the imaginations of children around the world.
What do, Mr. Potatoe Head, Rupert the Bear, Paddington Bear, Winnie The Pooh and the characters Tigger, Owl, Piglet, and Christopher Robin all have in common? They are household staples for children in North America and in other parts of the world.
These are characters that have leaped from toy to silver screen and remained etched in our minds for years. However as each new generation of children come and grow up they bring with them their favourite characters and toys. There are not many that become household names, where the characters spawn movies for the big screen, or DVD only or have dozens of different types of toys created that last forever.
Toy Story is probably one of the few success stories that has attracted the attention of kids around the world and if you've paid attention to the movies you'll know exactly why this movie and the spin-off toys have stayed in our mind: the characters. The movie makes use of well known, and loved characters and themes.
Take for instance Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head - they are in the movie, and this toy is also a favorite for children which has been around for more than 25 years. It is also a toy that has not changed much during that time, so older adults relate to it as much as younger kids.
Another character which has been part of Toy Story is Barbie and Ken. Barbie has been around for 50 years, and by introducing such a lovable character to a movie you really ensure the longevity of not only the movie but the many characters in it.
If you are an older adult you will also related to cowboys and Indians, and that's exactly what you get in Toy Story. Woody and his counterpart Jessie - both cowboys (and cowgirl). How about Buzz Lightyear? Or Rex? Hamm and Slinky the Dog are also well known kids toys.
When you look at Toy Story you notice that all the characters relate to toys that you and I played with when we were younger. How many children are not fascinated spaceships and defeating aliens? How many children don't have piggy banks on their shelves?
The fact that old and young can relate to the characters in Toy Story is what has helped turn this movie into one that kids will be watching for generations.
